Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in the second-largest canyon system in the United States. It lies within the High Plains ecoregion, and includes areas within the surrounding high plateau and within the valley of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The flat, fertile landscape on the plateau hosts broad swaths of irrigated farmland, dotted with small circular depressions that become shallow playa lakes during rainfall events. The Park preserves habitat for the threatened Palo Duro mouse and the Texas horned lizard.
Canyon is home to home to West Texas A&M University and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.
