Lake COlorado City State Park

Additional Information

This 55-mile wide image from April 8th, 2019 centers on Mitchell County, Texas. I-20 crosses the northern quarter of the scene, passing through a mosaic of agricultural fields from Sweetwater on the east towards Colorado City, Westbrook, and Big Spring. Lake Colorado City in the State Park originally provided cooling for the local power plant; it serves recreational purposes now.

The area was originally an open grassland, part of the Rolling Plains Ecoregion. Restoration efforts are under way within the Park to restore the land to its original state, through the removal of mesquite trees.

Midway between Abilene on the east and Midland on the west, Colorado City is home to The Heart of Texas Museum, located in the Recorded Texas Landmark Old McCulloch County Jail. The museum includes the Control Tower for the decommissioned Curtis Air Field, where over 10,000 airmen trained during WWII. The 21 Memorial commemorates the 21 pilots killed at the field and all military personnel killed in the line of duty.
