San Angelo State Park

Additional Information

This 55-mile wide scene from April 8th, 2019 shows fallow agricultural fields (shades of orange and red) surrounded by converging wooded stream valleys (turquoise) eroded into flat-lying plains within the Edwards Plateau ecoregion. Streams flow into the Concho River, named for pearls collected by early Spanish explorers from freshwater mussel shells (conchos).

San Angelo State Park lies at the convergence of the Edwards Plateau with three other Texas ecoregions – the Trans-Pecos, High Plains, and Rolling Plains. Biodiversity is high with representative species from all four ecoregions. The Park is one of four home sites for the Texas State Longhorn herd.  Fossilized trackways of pre-dinosaur creatures from the Permian Age are also found within the Park.

San Angelo is home to Angelo State University and to historic Fort Concho, one of a series of post-Civil War federal forts established to protect settlements. It is also home to Goodfellow Air Force Base.

San Angelo State Park is located at:

Latitude: 31.463922
