Multiple burn scars from drought-related fires dominate this 55-mile wide scene from April 5th 2009. The largest shows the burn that extended right up to the Lake Arrowhead margin, in the north-central part of the scene. Lake Arrowhead State Park lies just north of the burned area.
The State Park lies within the Rolling Plains ecoregion; its original grasslands have converted to mesquite savannah due to heavy, uncontrolled grazing. Restored grasslands within the park host both migratory birds and Monarch butterflies.
Wichita Falls at the top center edge of the scene is home to Midwestern State University, Sheppard Air Force Base, and the River Bend Nature Center. It also hosts the annual Hotter 'N Hell Hundred Bicycle Ride each August.
